“Thank you again for offering and making the workshop happen. In addition to making great photographs, I appreciate the opportunity to meet and interact with the Cuban people during the workshop. It makes it a unique and rewarding experience.” –Eric Smith
September 27, 2022 - Hurricane Ian makes landfall in the Pinar del Rio Province as a strong Category 3 hurricane at 08:30 UTC. 5 people were killed and over 100,000 homes were damaged.
Hurricane Ian caused inestimable damage to Cuba’s premier tobacco-growing region, Pinar del Rio. Over 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, displacing at least that many people. Due to a lack of funding and serious material shortages, the region has been unable to rebuild.
In December, Raul Cañibano, Cuba’s premier street photographer, and Steve Anchell will lead a group of experienced photographers to create a collaborative photo documentary that will be exhibited at the Fototeca (Cuban Photographers’ Union) in Havana in 2024.
We will gather in Havana for an orientation, then transfer to Vinales, where we will have inside access to tobacco farms, campesinos, and private homes. You will have the opportunity to work alongside Raul and Steve, with other group members, and on your own. Arrangements will be made as the project evolves, based on the needs and experience of the individual photographers.
To join this elite group of documentary photographers, you must have attended at least one street photography workshop with either Raul or Steve or submit a street photography portfolio for approval.

Fototeca de Cuba in Havana has provisionally agreed to sponsor a photo exhibit in 2024. Final approval for the show cannot be made until the work has been submitted to and approved by the governing board. However, we are confident that the quality of the work will exceed their expectations.
There is an exhibit fee required from each photographer. This will help defray the cost of printing, framing, and hanging the final photos. The $200 fee will be added to your invoice for the workshop. If for any reason the exhibit does not take place the fee will be refunded.
Our trips to Cuba are compliant with current U.S. government regulations. Participants will be authorized for travel to Cuba under the “Support for the Cuban People” category of legal travel to Cuba.
This workshop is in alliance with Cuba's premier photographic organization, Fototeca de Cuba. Our unique program allows U.S. participants to learn about Cuba's long and colorful history and have meaningful interactions with Cubans from all walks of life.
True to the requirements of a General License for Support for the Cuban People, the Master Class with Raul Cañibano offers a full-time schedule of meaningful interactions with the Cuban people that promote independent activity and record their amazing lives with our cameras.
Enrollment for the Master Class is limited to six participants. Participants make their air travel arrangements to Havana and return to the U.S. Once the trip is confirmed, additional information and travel details will be provided.
